How Long Should Signage Last?

Is all signage equally durable? When you make a big purchase like signage for your business, it is natural to want to know how long your investment will last and what you can do to maximize its longevity. From custom indoor signage to wayfinding signs and those exterior building signs that face environmental elements, the material used can impact the longevity and durability of any type of signage.

How Long Should Signage Last

The first step towards investing in long lasting signs is to work with a signage company that understands the benefits and drawbacks of a wide variety of materials and knowing which will work best for you. SSK Signs is proud of our robust process that ensures a clear understanding of all project requirements and our reliable supplier network that provides the right materials and skills to make each project successful.

While no one can guarantee the life span of a sign, there are some benchmarks you can use to get an idea of what to expect from your signs. Let’s take a look at both indoor and outdoor signs and material options to find out more.

Indoor Signs

For indoor signs, the biggest factor to consider in terms of longevity is design and content. It is usually the information on the sign, the colours or the design that expires long before the material does.

Custom indoor signage or wayfinding signs often need to be changed out due to the information or images no longer being accurate or appropriate for the project or the business.  That being said though, the type of adhesive or mounting method and the materials used to produce the sign is important and will extend the life of a sign by keeping it looking fresh and professional.

Exterior Signs

Exterior signs have a much harder job as they need to stand up against sun, rain, wind snow and continual fluctuations in temperature. The most common types of materials used for outdoor signage are listed below.

Aluminum composite: A strong, durable option that is also lightweight and has an estimated average 10-year life. This material is one of the most popular materials used.

Aluminum: One of the biggest benefits of this option is that aluminum will not rust. You will most often see this material used for parking lot or street signs. An aluminum sign could last up to 7 to 10 years but painted aluminum will experience fading or peeling. Aluminum dimensional letters often come with a life time guarantee.

Plastics: This material offers many, many choices. Depending on how the sign is finished, you could expect it to last from anywhere from 5 to 10 years. Some of the dimensional letters offered by SSK Signs will come with a life time guarantee.  While the colour may fade with time, the letters themselves will remain intact.

Vinyl banners: Considered the least long lasting, vinyl banners can last up to two to three years, but longevity is greatly impacted by weather.

Wood or HDU: Wood signs made from cedar could have a life span of eight to 10 years while signage in HDU (high density urethane) will last for 10 years or more. This material choice does require maintenance in order to extend the service life.
